Description |
English: In 1901, the Moran Brothers Company shipyard of Seattle won the bid to build one of three battleships for the U. S. Navy. Construction of the ship, named Nebraska, began on July 4, 1902 and the ship was launched on October 7, 1904. Over 1,000 workers helped build the Nebraska, a Virginia-class pre-dreadnought battleship with a beam of 76 feet and a length of 441 feet.
This image was taken on July 4, 1902, the day of the keel laying ceremony for the Nebraska. It shows the machine shop at the shipyard, located at the foot of South Charles Street south of Pioneer Square. Two men wearing suits can be seen facing the camera in the center of the frame. Three additional men in appear to be at work on the left side of the frame.
