Description
Print; Prints. Thomas Paine returned to his adopted country during the presidency of his friend Thomas Jefferson. But this did not hold him back from venting his indignation at what he took to be the apostasy of George Washington and John Adams, whom he accused, among other outrages, of wanting to return the United States to monarchical rule. His series of newspaper articles castigating the Federalists and their policies is countered in this cartoon showing Paine, with the help of the devil, attempting to pull down the structure of the federal government. "Oh I fear it is stronger rooted than I expected," says Tom, "but with the assistance of my Old Friend & a little more Brandy I will bring it down."
