Summary edit

Description
English: A porcelain dinner plate owned by then-U.S. Secretary of State James Madison in 1806. The plate features a colored, bas-relief design of pinwheels and leaf fronds in the Empire style.

The china service of which this plate was part was manufactured by Nast of Paris. The Madisons continued to use the plate after Madison became President of the United States.

The pattern on the plate inspired a similar, bas-relief, uncolored design on the dinner plates and teacups of the Obama china service.
