| Description |
English: Madrid Cathedral (Santa Maria la Real de la Almudena), 28 April 2008. Construction begun in 1879 as a church by Giamattista Saccheti on the site of a mosque but in 1883 it was decided to make it a Cathedral, the first in Madrid; it would replace that in Toledo as the seat of the RC Church in Spain. A new design in Gothic Revival style by the Maquis de Cubas was adopted. Construction stopped suring the Spanish Civil War but resumed in 1950 to amended plans in Baroque style by Fernando Chueca Goita to match the Palacio Royale on the opposite side of the Plaza de la Armeria. The Cathedral was finally completed in 1993! |
