Summary edit

Description
English: Mariamman Teppakulam , a historic monument of Madurai, Tamil Nadu , India is a big water tank and it was built by the KIng 'Thirumalai Nayak' in 1645 AD. The tank is 305 m long and 290 m wide. The middle of the tank is called 'Mya Mandapam' where a temple for Lord Vigneshwara was built. The temple structure is symmetric in pattern and it consists of the Main Gopuram in the middle and the four corners are adorned with four little Gopurams. Every year on full moon day of Tamil Month 'Thai' (which falls in the third week of January) , float festival is celebrated since the time of Thirumalai Nayak. The tank festival starts with the idols of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Somasundareshwar being taken from the Meenakshi temple. Then the deities are housed in a decorated and illuminated raft (constructed by tying wooden planks together using ropes) and it floats on the tank. By pulling the ropes tied to the raft, the float carrying the deities is taken around the tank for the darshan (Getting blessing) by the devotees assembled outside the tank. The event is marked by display of fireworks and the assemblage of huge crowd of devotees around the tank.
