| Description | A sign below the Magellan's Cross describes the original cross is encased inside the wooden cross that is found in the center of the chapel. This is to protect the original cross from people who chipped away parts of the cross for souvenir purposes or in the belief that the cross possesses miraculous powers. Some vendors there were a bit of a nuisance, as they kept sticking bunches of candles into my face. Some locals were accepting them (for a price of course) and appeared to be going into a trance, praying fervently before the historic cross. (Cebu, Philippines, May 2013) |
