Description
English: Grave of Henry Hitchcock within Magnolia Cemetery in Mobile, Alabama. Born in Vermont, Hitchcock was the grandson of Gen. Ethan Allen. He moved to Mobile as a 24 year old lawyer. Early on he served as Secretary of the Alabama Territory and Acting Governor. He wrote much of Alabama's first constitution and served as Alabama's first Attorney General. He later served as Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. In addition to his legal career, he was also a businessman and amassed a fortune in excess of two million dollars, making him Alabama's first millionaire. He died from Yellow Fever in 1839 at the age of 44.
