Summary edit

Description Another perhaps too familiar garden shrub that deserves some attention being drawn to it. The red foliage this winter is especially strong and sets off the yellow flowers very well. M.japonica is a spreading plant with broad sea-green foliage. The flowers are heavily Convallaria scented in horizontal spikes in winter and are untouched by our frosts. Really a very tough and reliable shrub, totally cold tolerant, at least in the UK and especially good in dry shade and equally happy on acid or chalky soils.
