Description

On 22 May 1903, Māori King Mahuta Te Wherowhero (c. 1855-1912) was sworn in as a member of the Executive Council. To mark the occasion, a ceremony was held at Government House in Auckland, with 200 to 300 Māori reportedly in attendance.

Prime Minister Richard Seddon suggested that King Mahuta take a seat on the Legislative Council, as he wanted to gain Mahuta’s support for opening up the King Country for European settlement. Mahuta eventually accepted this offer in 1903, and the Kingship was temporarily passed to his younger brother, Te Wherowhero Tāwhiao.

According to historian Angela Ballara, “His appointment was widely regarded as the end of Waikato Maori isolation and intransigence; in fact it was the beginning of a short-lived experiment in co-operation with Pakeha authority.”

Mahuta soon became disillusioned with his limited role in the Legislative Council, and he took no active part in debates after 1907. He had been dropped from the Executive Council after a reshuffle in 1906. His term ended on the Legislative Council ended in 1910, when he resumed the Kingship.

The letter pictured above was sent from Joseph Chamberlain, Secretary of State for the Colonies, to The Earl of Ranfurly, Governor-General of New Zealand. Chamberlain was acknowledging receipt of a telegram regarding Te Wherowhero’s appointments.
