English: This world map, commissioned by the General Post Office (GPO) in 1937, depicts the international steamship network of the British postal service. The title appears along the top with the GPO logo designed by MacDonald Gill.
Great Britain is situated at the centre of the map with routes radiating to anywhere on the globe, giving an impression that the country is well connected with the rest of the world. The surrounding borders depict scenes relating to the mail delivery stages from the red post box and post delivery van to steamship at a dock loading cargo. Along the bottom, a set of 11 vignettes portrays the evolution of sailing ships since the time of King Alfred to the ocean liner RMS Queen Mary. |
