| Description |
English: Main Street, St Kilda This view shows the new black houses of the 1830s and the cottages of the 1860s. The 25 black houses were built in the traditional way, but had small glass windows. The 16 cottages, which had chimneys at both ends and a window on each side of the door, were the first houses to face towards the bay. Their original zinc sheeting roofs soon blew away and had to be replaced with felt. At the time, these were the best quality houses in the whole of the Hebrides. The black houses became used as stores and byres. (Source: "The Life and Death of St Kilda", by Tom Steel). |
