English: Main street at Newstead Newstead was the home of the masons working on the construction of Melrose Abbey in the twelfth century, and boasts to be the "oldest inhabited settlement in Scotland". This bold claim rests on the nearby Roman fort of Trimontium, which was constructed and occupied during the late 1st century and early 2nd century AD. Though the fort's structural remains are no longer in evidence, painstaking archaeological work over the years has shed much light on the Roman occupation of Trimontium. |
