red in Lewiston, and shortty took up hisabode on the farm in Auburn owned by Mr. Thomas Mansfield, where hetrapped in the fall and winter, doing farm work at other times. Heremained there until September, 1892, when he went to South Monmouthand established himself on the shore of Lake Tacoma, where he has sincemade his home, though he sometimes remains away from there for monthsat a time. In South Monmouth Brown soon became a noted local character, andis a general favorite among the townspeople, being familiarly spoken ofas the Lake Tacoma guide. He lives there in a small house with a shedattachment, together with his wife, who is quite an artist, and who hasmade some excellent sketches of the surroundings, which have beenaccepted by a prominent art school. In the attic of the house he keepshis cured pelts, dried and ready for the market, while the outside of hisshed is sometimes literally thatched with the fur of the fox, coon, skunk,mink and other animals, skins not yet fully cured.
