English: Mainstay Counseling, 2178 Main Street at Robie Street, Buffalo, New York, December 2020. An odd-man-out among the typical Queen Anne-, Craftsman-, and Prairie-styled housing stock of the Parkside East Historic District, this building - otherwise known as the Rev. Clemens Niemann House - distinguishes itself with its brick exterior and resolutely Romanesque Revival design. The attention-grabbing feature here are the arcaded windows on the second and third floors, topped consecutively with elegant semicircular arches and eyebrow window heads whose dark purple tone makes for a striking color contrast vis-à-vis the pastel yellow of the façade per se. The Classical elements requisite of the style come in the form of engaged Doric columns set between the aforementioned windows as well as gable returns on the north and east elevations that give the impression of broken pediments. Conversely, the shingles that serve as siding on the second-floor wing between the cross gables, as well as the house's overall sprawled massing, represent at least a modicum of effort in harmonizing with its neighbors. The house was built in 1895 and served as home to the Rev. Henry Clemens Niemann (1841-1911) until his death of laryngeal cancer. Born in Alsace, Rev. Niemann arrived in Buffalo in 1886 and served initially as head pastor at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, until an attack of severe rheumatoid arthritis in about 1894 forced him to step down. In this house, Rev. Niemann enjoyed a comfortable semi-retirement during which he pursued missionary work as well as saying the occasional Mass at the Buffalo Deaf Mute Institute. Subsequent to its use as a private residence, the building has served variously as a teahouse, tourist lodge, veterans' hall, and ultimately medical offices. Mainstay Counseling, a practice that offers support to those suffering from mental illness, has occupied the building since 2019.
