Description
Deutsch: Mainz a. Rhein - Eisenbahnbrücke, Blick auf den Ruderclub.
Die Mainzer Südbrücke hat nie einen offiziellen Namen erhalten und wird auch als Eisenbahnbrücke Mainz-Süd bezeichnet, obwohl die Station Mainz-Süd mittlerweile in Mainz Römisches Theater umbenannt wurde. Die Brücke, die 1862 in Betrieb genommen wurde, überspannt den Rhein und verbindet Mainz mit den hessischen Eisenbahnlinien. Die beiden neugotischen Türme der Brücke sollten im Kriegsfall zur Verteidigung dienen.
Kurz vor Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs sprengte die Wehrmacht die Brücke, um den Vormarsch der US-Armee zu verhindern, doch die Brückentürme blieben stehen.
