English: The images are part of a collection belonging to a Scottish aristocrat, Lord James Broun-Ramsay, 1st Marquess of Dalhousie, who served as Governor General of India from 1848 to 1856 and after his retirement moved to Malta where he lived for a time. The Marquess eventually left Malta and headed back to Scotland where he died in 1860.

Pictures of his grand-looking garden in Gwardamangia are featured, as well as images of Ta' Xbiex, Msida and Marsamxett taken from his rooftop. The snaps include views of Pieta Creek, several decades before St Luke’s Hospital was built on the hill.

The photographs were snapped up by Jack Cator from Madliena recently. He said: ‘I acquired the original photo album dating from the 1850s to the 1870s at a London auction last year. It consists of 40 or so photographs and drawings of Malta.’
