| Description |
English: Goods train for Malvern on the branch from Ashchurch via Tewkesbury, 1951. View NW from Puckrup Lane at Bow Farm south of Ripple, also exactly on the Gloucestershire/Worcestershire county boundary. The train is headed by an ex-Midland 3F 0-6-0: note the number of cattle-wagons, much used for transporting live animals in those days. It is running on the right because although formerly double-line, ever since 1916 only the Down line between Tewkesbury and Upton-on-Severn was used for traffic (by the Train Staff & Ticket system), the other line being retained for wagon storage. This unusual branch line was closed Upton - Malvern in 12/52, Tewkesbury - Upton in 7/63 and Ashchurch - Tewkesbury in 11/64. I grew up beside it, but 50+ years later there remains hardly a trace, apart from the boarded-up Mythe Tunnel near Tewkesbury. |
