editDescriptionMan with enigmatic expression by T & J Holroyd.jpg |
Photograph of a man with an enigmatic expression by T & J Holroyd of Harrogate. The photographers were brothers Thomas Holroyd (1821–1904) and James Holroyd (c.1825–1874). Thomas was a portrait and landscape painter, and James was a photographer, both from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. Although they were both credited, it was James who took most of the photographs. Critical commentary: This man could be sad, or he could be about to smile. There is something wrong with the fingers of his left hand, which is perhaps intentionally half-hidden. He appears to be wearing an undershirt. He has apparently attempted to grow sideburns, but they have grown sparsely, and his hair has been professionally styled. That said, it is a graceful portrait of a person who looks vulnerable.
