Summary edit

Description
English: Map by M. Lionel Bender and colleagues (1976) representing the consensus among ethnographers and linguists about the approximate extent of the Tigrinya language. Box shows Western and Southwestern Tigray. The map served as a base, among others, for the one used in the Encyclopaedia Aethiopica. With few exceptions, the current Western Tigray has consistently been mapped as Tigrinya-speaking, with Kunama along the shores of the lower Tekeze River. Localised “T” at Humera (locality 39) for Takruri, people of West African origin who settled along their pilgrim route to Mecca. Most Kunama speakers live in Eritrea, north of the Tekeze, and the Tigrinya-speaking area extends also well into Eritrea, north of the Mereb River. The post-1992 Tigray region encompasses the Tigrinya- (as well as Kunama- and Saho-) speaking areas of Ethiopia. Map credit: Oxford University Press. This map extract is conformably oriented with north up. Published in: Nyssen, J., Biadgilgn Demissie, 2023. Administrative and ethno-linguistic boundaries of Western Tigray (Ethiopia) since 1683.
