Summary edit

Description
English: Mapledene Primary School, Sheldon. When this school was builit in the 1950's Birmingham Airport was known as Elmdon Aerodrome. It was tiny and airtraffic was very light. There's very little between the back of this school and the main runway of Birmingham Airport now. Living in this area, the children may get used to the noise.

Please I would like to edit this page: As a former pupil of this school, I seem to remember rightly or wrongly that there was an ornate stone carved plaque above the main entrance where mostly the teachers went in, which was dated '1925'! far earlier than the 1950's. This part of the building looked older to me and more impressive than the other presumably newer tacked-on extensions. I always seemed to like this part of the school. The other parts to me were blocky and uninviting. If I could go in here in the morning I would, almost sneaking in, mostly late after stroking my cat!...It led pretty much straight to the 'haunted' assembly hall and the even more 'haunted' back stage where we set off a fire extinguisher and spent the rest of half a day clearing up unchallenged by teachers! Some really life affirming assemblies in the hall which have stayed with me until this very day. Well done for the morality instilled. Thank you Mapledene, I owe so much.
