Explore #391 July 7, 2009 :) © Andrea Westmoreland Taken at the St. Augustine Alligator farm. This is a Marabou Stork. scientific name: Leptoptilos crumeniferus This was taken during breeding season and they look worse than normal at this time. The head becomes scabby. There was a keeper inside with him and the keeper was armed with a long stick to fend off the bird who kept walking around seemingly strategizing how to get to the man to harm him. They had several moments of encounter when a sword fight of sorts went on beak to stick. It was amazing to watch. This bird is actually quite large. Several feet high that I believe is close to four feet.
