Las hojas, que tienen forma ovoide, son de color verde claro, con manchas pardas oscuras. A medida que envejecen se tornan más verdes. Durante la noche adoptan la posición erguida, mientras que durante el día están en posición horizontal. Las imágenes que subi estas fueron tomadas en el dia. Esta planta posee unas pequeñas flores blancas con estrías púrpuras. Para crecer sana necesita un elevado grado de humedad, suelo humífero y bien drenado, y riego abundante en la época de mayor desarrollo.

En el invierno debe reducirse radicalmente la frecuencia de riego. Se multiplica por división de matas o esquejes de tallo en el verano.
