Description

This statue represents the god Mithras immolating a bull in company of two acolytes. A dog and a snake lick the spilled blood. The inscription reads: alcimvs ti(berii) - cl(audii) - liviani ser(vus) vil(i)c(vs) - sol(i) - m(ithrae) - v(otum) - s(olvit) - d(onum) d(edit). Meaning: Alcimus, slave and doorkeeper of Tiberius Claudius Livianus, gave this as a gift to the sun-god Mithras to fulfill one vow.

Followers of Mithras believed that the blood of the bull was the source of life. Mithras worship was popular among soldiers and traders, who spread it throughout empire. Marble. 100-200 AD. Place of discovery unknown. From the British Museum, inv. 1805,0703,270. Picture taken at the Oog in oog met de Romeinen (Eye to Eye with the Romans) Exhibition in the Gallo-Romeins Museum of Tongres.
