Description
English: A portrait of Maria Sofia (1841-1925), Queen consort of Francis II of the Two Sicilies. Born as Maria Sophie Amalie in the Bavarian royal family of Wittelsbach she had the title of Duchess in Bavaria. She was the daughter of Maximilian, Duke in Bavaria and Ludovika, Royal Princess of Bavaria and was a younger sister of Empress Elisabeth ("Sissi") who married Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria. She married Francis in 1859 and he became King a few months later. Although the kingdom was lost in the drive to unite Italy during the siege of Gaeta (1860-1861) she demonstrated great courage during the battles and she remained a respected figure in Europe to her death.
