Description

Princess Marie of Baden (1834-1899) later Princess Ernest of Leiningen

Queen Victoria wrote to the Princess Royal on 28 December 1859: ‘Moira (that Portuguese Artist who paints now quite beautifully) is making a miniature of her [Marie Leiningen] now’. The miniature was clearly complete by 15 February 1860: ‘Moira (who does paint beautifully) has done a beautiful one of dear Marie L, wh. I will also send you to look at’ (RA VIC/ADDU/32).

Marie, daughter of Leopold, Grand Duke of Baden, and Sophie, daughter of Gustav IV, King of Sweden, married, in 1858, Ernest, Prince of Leiningen, son of Charles, Prince of Leiningen, and Countess Marie von Klebelsburg. They had two children. Her eldest sister, Alexandrine of Baden, married Prince Albert’s brother, Ernest II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
