Description
English: Marilla Country Store, 1673 Two Rod Road at Bullis Road, Marilla, New York, November 2020. The oldest continually operating general store in New York State, the business traces its origins to 1851, when it opened as the second location of the grocery, dry goods and hardware store belonging to Harrison T. Foster (1827-1889), who was not only a prominent merchant but one of Marilla's leading citizens in its early days, serving no fewer than twelve terms as town supervisor. Sandy and Paul Grunzweig are the current owners, all in all the third family to operate the business. The architecture is vernacular and undistinguished in style, but retains a remarkable degree of integrity vis-à-vis its original appearance especially when it comes to the interior, where the original plank floors, countertops, and vintage gaslights remain intact. The historic ambience, along with a wide range of gifts and specialty goods and a small museum with displays related to the history of the store and the town, have rendered the shop a visitor attraction of significant local prominence.
