English: The initals and date are apparently retrofitted. A plaque on the frame identifies the painter as Anton Melbye (1818-1875), but the people at Bruun Rasmussen did not buy that story and identified the painter as an unknown Danish painter from the 19th century. The steamer Christian VIII had an interesting career, starting life in Scotland in 1831 as the James Wood, before being sold to owners in Holstein and renamed in 1840. When Schleswig-Holstein rebelled against Denmark in 1848, the ship was sold to the insurgent navy and became the Bonin. As part of the peace agreement she was handed over to the Danish Navy in 1852 and lent out to private owners for some months as the Mercur. She was then put up for sale by the Danish Navy, but nothing came out of it and she was instead used as a transport barge (Styktransportpram Nr. 2) until broken up around 1870. Dansk: Initialerne og årstallet på billedet er åbenbart tilføjet senere, og på rammen er der sat et metalskilt, der identificerer maleren som Anton Melbye (1818-1875). Folkene hos Bruun Rasmussen har valgt at se bort fra dette og omtaler kunstneren som en dansk maler fra det 19. århundrede. Hjuldamperen Christian VIII på billedet havde i øvrigt en omskiftelig karriere. Den blev bygget i Skotland i 1831 som James Wood, og derpå solgt i 1840 til ejere i Holsten og omdøbt. Under den 1. Slesvigske krig blev skibet i 1848 købt af oprørsregeringen og omdøbt til Bonin. Som led i fredsaftalen blev det i 1852 overdraget til den danske Marine, der udlånte skibet i nogle måneder til private ejere, der omdøbte det til Mercur. Da det blev tilbageleveret, forsøgte Marinen at sælge det, men uden held, og det blev i stedet brugt som transportpram, med navnet Styktransportpram Nr. 2. Ophugget omkring 1870. |
