Description
English: Photo taken at the Royal Norwegian Navy Museum (Norwegian: Marinemuseet) in Horten, Norway:
  • Award letter with the following text:
"We, Haakon VII, King of Norway, make it known that under September 30, 1946, we have awarded Sgt. Capt. Leif Welding Olsen the St. Olav's Medal with Oak Branch – Post Mortem – for personal efforts for Norway by showing fearlessness and outstanding duty loyalty when, on April 8, 1940, he led his vessel O/S "Pol III" in an attack against superior enemy naval forces in the Outer Oslo Fjord."
The document is pre-printed with calligraphic and typed text added. It is signed and bears a stamped emblem with a heraldic royal shield and helmet, with the inscription "Haakon VII, King of Norway." The letter is framed behind glass, and the paper is partially damaged and stained with mold.
  • Leif Welding Olsen, born in 1895 in Horten, was a Norwegian naval officer and the first Norwegian to fall during Nazi Germany's invasion of Norway in April 1940. As the captain of the patrol vessel HNoMS Pol III, he collided with the torpedo destroyer Albatross, part of the German invasion force, on the night of April 8 in the Oslofjord. Welding Olsen was injured by German machine gun fire and drowned before midnight on the evening of April 8. Thus, he fell before the official date of the outbreak of World War II in Norway.

Kpt.
