Description
English: Photo taken at the Royal Norwegian Navy Museum (Norwegian: Marinemuseet) in Horten:
  • Scale model og naval ship, pictures, text boards, etc.
  • Display mannequin wearing an naval officer's uniform for the Royal Norwegian Navy (Norwegian: Den Kongelige Norske Marine) from World War II, with binoculars hanging around the neck. The jacket sleeves have rank distinctions for the rank of captain in the form of three gilded stripes or braids, the uppermost with a loop, around the forearm. The peaked cap has a badge with an embroidered, crowned, and wreathed anchor symbol as the main emblem and golden embroidered leaf decorations ("scrambled eggs" on its visor, introduced as a distinction for staff officers from 1942.
  • German Enigma cipher device exhibited behind glass. Enigma was the product name for a series of electromechanical encryption machines extensively used by most German military forces for both encryption and decryption of information during World War II. The coding machine here has four rotors (rotating cylinders), a typewriter-like keyboard, plugs in a contact panel and a wooden box.
  • The Motorised Submersible Canoe (MSC), nicknamed Sleeping Beauty, was built by the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) during World War II as an underwater vehicle for a single frogman to perform clandestine reconnaissance or attacks against enemy vessels.

Marinemuseet is one of the world's oldest naval museums. The navy museum was founded in 1853 and has been in the old magazine on Karljohansvern since 1864. The "old department" is somewhat retained, but the museum has later grown to more than 2.000 sqm, rich in information and close proximity to the many models and objects.
