DESCRIPTION For other photographs of the Marine training, see images with Photo IDs, uclamss_1429_15068 through uclamss_1429_15073 An edited version of this photograph appears in the photo spread, "Camp Pendleton Makes Its Marines Tough," Los Angeles Times, 14 Apr. 1943: B Related to the article, "MARINES TRAINING FOR DEADLIER WAR: Dirtiest Fighting Tactics of Japs Improved on by Picked Men Schooled on Toughest Course," Los Angeles Times, 14 Apr. 1943: A A pool littered with debris stretches back from the bottom edge. To the left of it, a tall platform stands in partial view. Three Marines fall through the air, 2 at left and one at center, having just leapt from a 33-foot tall platform. The two at left remain close to the platform and the one at center appears to float in mid-air above the middle of the pool. One man stands along the left side of the pool and beneath the platform's framework. He looks up towards the jumping Marines. A base building stands in the distance, off-center to the right. Text from newspaper caption: From the Hip--Lieut. Col. Dick Hanley, rear left, ex-football coach, knows how to harden men. That's his job at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside. Here are some pictures of that hardening process. Above are men on range with deadly Reising guns. Right, they learn to jump into debris-laden water from 33-foot tower. Story on Page A.
