Description

Mars Express VMC image of Mars taken from an altitude of 10,000 km on March 25, 2019. This image captures the north pole of Mars shortly after it passed the spring equinox. The bright region surrounding the pole is a seasonal CO2 frost cap formed when the atmosphere freezes out in the winter cold.

This image is a stack of five separate images taken with the Mars Express Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC). The quality of the image stack allowed enlargement to 1.5x the original image size. The VMC is a small webcam originally placed on the spacecraft for public outreach and revived as a science instrument in 2016.
