Description The Marshall Field Company Store in Chicago (1914). Potter Palmer founded the dry goods store later known as Marshall Field's in 1852. Palmer invited Marshall Field and Levi Leiter to join as partners in 1865 so that he could focus his interests elsewhere; Palmer left in 1867. As the Great Chicago Fire engulfed the city, Field and Leiter moved as much merchandise as possible into Leiter's house, which was out of the way of the fire. The store burned to the ground, but so much merchandise was saved that Field & Leiter were able to quickly recover. Field bought out Leiter in 1881, renaming the company Marshall Field & Co. He also revolutionized the dry goods industry by posting prices on the products, ending the practice of haggling. As the company grew in significance, it needed a new flagship store in Chicago. Daniel H. Burnham was commissioned to build a new store in anticipation of the potential influx of customers due to the upcoming World's Columbian Exposition. Tiffany & Co. designed a mosaic dome in the five-story atrium, and is still the largest glass mosaic of its kind. In 2006, a company-who-shall-not-be-named purchased the Marshall Field's stores and replaced them with their own nameplate.
