Español: Estas manifestaciones festivas son tradicionales de los meses invernales.
Aunque en dicho período estacional también se celebran los Carnavales, la relación entre ambas es circunstancial. Los Carnavales nacen como consecuencia del tiempo litúrgico de la Cuaresma; ante la rigidez impuesta por ésta en ayunos y abstinencias de todo tipo, desde época medieval, durante los días anteriores se multiplican los abusos en comidas y bebidas, en críticas sociales, en desórdenes generalizados. Frente a la máscara carnavalesca que pretende ocultar la personalidad del enmascarado, en estas manifestaciones festivas invernales las máscaras no ocultan sino que representan a unos personajes determinados con un simbolismo complejo formado a lo largo del tiempo.
