Description
English: Masjid At-Taqwa, 40 Parker Avenue at Amherst Street, Buffalo, New York, January 2021. Though a mosque today, the building was once a private residence - one of the first to be built in the neighborhood known as Central Park, developed by Lewis J. Bennett on what was once his vast suburban estate, located across the street from his limestone quarry - and it still serves as a remarkable early (1895) example of the Arts & Crafts style of residential architecture. The shallow-pitched hipped roof with widely overhanging eaves, exposed rafter tails, low-slung dormer, and bottom-heavy, sprawled massing are all characteristic of the style. What's decidedly not reminiscent of the style is the pedimented portico facing Parker Avenue, projected in cantilever over the front steps and sheltering an arched entranceway. The house's first owner was William F. Gardner (1844-1899), a shipping clerk employed by the Niagara Elevator, while its second and much longer-term owner was Dr. Arthur G. Sage (1869-1951), a family physician who practiced at Deaconess Hospital. Both of them lived in the house until their respective deaths. The Islamic Society of the Niagara Frontier purchased the building in 1973 and has operated it as a mosque since then.
