editDescriptionMasonic Lodge, St. John's Street - geograph.org.uk - 1339636.jpg |
English: Masonic Lodge, St. John's Street The headquarters of the Priory of Scotland of the Most Venerable Order of St John is the only survivor of a row of 18th-century houses that occupied the west side of St John's Street in the Canongate. It is attached to a modern building housing the Freemasons' Lodge Canongate Kilwinning No.2, which claims to be the oldest masonic lodge in existence. It was here that Robert Burns was appointed Poet Laureate in 1787. The street was built in 1786. Among its distinguished inhabitants was Lord Monboddo, who was unjustly ridiculed for his eccentric ideas foreshadowing Darwin's theory of evolution. |
