English: Masons' Marks, Downholme Bridge Marks made by the stonemason who cut that particular block of stone. No marks could be found on modern replacement blocks. Shame really.
The first bridge over the Swale was built in 1684 as private access for John Hutton, squire of Marske Hall, and much repaired a century later in 1771 following flood damage. The bridge was rebuilt in 1836 and then provided access from Marske to the new turnpike road along Swaledale. |
