| Description |
mat muhly, Muhlenbergia richardsonis, Nevada, White Mountains, Sugarloaf, Pinchot Creek - Columbus Salt Marsh drainage, elevation 2708 m (8885 ft). This rhizomatous perennial is one of the most widespread native grasses in North America, extending coast to coast across boreal Canada, and southward in the western Mountains to northwestern Mexico, at elevations up to 3670 meters (12000 feet) elevation. At lower elevations it is often found in moist alkaline places, but higher in the mountains it can form extensive turf on dry open sites. The annual Muhlenbergia filiformis (pullup muhly) is otherwise scarcely distinct, and is also widespread in western North America in somewhat moister sites up to 3300 meters (11000 feet elevation). Other than being annual, it is said to differ by having glabrous stem internodes and somewhat blunter glumes, but I don't see anything much different in these images. |
