English: Mathry Church, southern aspect The name Mathry derives from the Holy Martyrs to whom the church is dedicated, said to be Seven Saints: septuplets born to a local woman whose husband, horrified at the prospect of supporting them, tried to drown them. They were saved by St Teilo and thereafter a fish appeared for each of them for sustenance every day, thus they were known as Dyfrwyr/Watermen. They came to live at Mathry and in 1720 their stone coffins were said to be still visible in the churchyard - which, being circular, suggests that the church occupies a pre-Christian site. Viewed here from across the green it is central to the village with houses ranged around all sides. |
