Description

The Alchemist by Mattheus von Helmont (Antwerp 1623-After 1679, Brussels) Oil on Canvas.

A bearded seated man facing three quarters left, with glasses and bright red shirt, bends over open book on desk stacked high with mess of books, papers, glassware. More of same at his feet plus broken and unbroken crockery, large copper pan, and strands of straw throughout. At left middle ground two men at table; behind them a man stands by a large furnace and pours from one vessel into another. To right in background through partition are three men around a free standing small furnace heating a pot.

Van Helmont was a follower of Adrien Brouwer and David Teniers II. Popular subjects for these artists include peasant interiors, alchemists, doctors, and craftsmen at work.
