Description Matthew Paris: Chronica Majora II, fol. 70v: Francis of Assisi preaches to the birds.
Heading: Sanctus Franciscus Romana spretus in urbe / dia serit volucrum sermonis semina turb[a]e. – Saint Francis, scorned in the city of Rome, is scattering the seeds of his sermon among a flock of birds.
Francis' words: Avete aves. Laudate creatorem vestrum / qui vos pascit et ordinatis plumis ves-/tit, nec laboratis, netis, aratis vel / seminatis, nec in horrea congregatis. – Greetings to you, birds! Praise your creator, who nourishes you and dresses you in orderly feathers, and you don't (have to) work nor weave nor plough nor sow nor harvest ('gather into barns').
Caption below the illustration: Dum iter ageret per vallem Spoletanam / hoc evenit, nec tantum de columbis, cornicibus / vel monedulis, sed volturibus et volucribus rapacibus. – While he was passing through the valley of Spoleta, this happened, and not just with doves, crows or jackdaws, but with vultures and birds of prey.
