Bas d'une colonne du mausolée de Khodja Akhmad (ou Hodja Ahmad)

Ce mausolée a été construit vers 1350, c'est un des plus anciens du site, il est recouvert de panneaux de terre cuite sculptée et émaillée réalisées par le maître de Samarcande : Fakhri Ali

Photo Annie Dalbéra _________ Shah-i-Zinda est la nécropole du "Roi vivant", en raison de l'existence d'une légende liée à la mort de Qassim-ibn-Abbas, protecteur de Samarcande et Saint islamique.

C'est un chemin bordé de tombes et de mausolées qui monte sur la colline d'Afrosyab (le lieu de l'antique Samarcande). Un escalier a été construit au XVIIIème siècle.

Le mausolée du cousin du Prophête : Qassim-ibn-Abbas, a été construit à cet endroit au XIème siècle. Ce missionnaire musulman était arrivé en Sogdiane en 676 au moment de la conquête arabe. De nombreuses tombes ont été construites à proximité de celle du Saint dans les siècles qui ont suivi.
