Descended from Maynard of Sherford in the parish of Brixton, Devon (as is stated on monument to Sir Henry Maynard (d.1610) in the Bourchier-Maynard South Chapel of the Church of St Mary the Virgin at Little Easton, Essex), which family bore arms: Argent, three sinister hands couped at the wrist gules (Vivian, Lt.Col.
