Logging deforested much of the region at the turn of the century, followed by tremendous forest fires which burned the slash from the deforestation. It's said that as much as eight feet of top soil was consumed in places by these fires. The resulting ash eventually washed into the various waters of the Mazinaw area leaving great tree roots exposed along the shore lines which can still be seen in places.
