Explanatory sign for EMU

Summary

edit
Description
English: Explanatory signboard for the JNR KuMoHa101-902 EMU that was once preserved in the JR East Oi Plant. The description is as follows.

Electric multiple unit, KuMoHa 101-902 (former MoHa 90503)

This EMU was one of the two cars manufactured at the Oi Plant in 1957 based on a new concept that was not bound by conventional technology in order to cope with the sharp increase in transportation in big cities in the future. The EMUs of this series became the basis of current commuter ones. They were composed entirely of motor cars with two cars as one unit, and were equipped with lightweight electric motors, cardan jointed drives, AC electric generators, all welded structural bogies, and electro-pneumatic brakes. The car bodies were lightweight, and the interiors were modern in style. Subsequently, following 10 prototype cars, some design changed and other improvements were made, and they became the backbone of the current commuter train (103 Series). This lightweight technology contributed to the realization of the world's first long-distance train.
