Description
English: Built in 1813, this Federal-style house was constructed, likely using slave labor, to house two university professors. The house was altered in 1856 under the direction of Clark Waring, using slave labor, with slave quarters being located in the attic, which were destroyed during a 1975 renovation. The building features a stucco-clad exterior, a symmetrical five-bay front facade, a side-gable roof, a large front gable with a fanlight attic vent, twelve-over-eight, eight-over-eight, and twelve-over-twelve double-hung windows, blind arches above the three central bays on the second floor, paired entrance doors at a raised porch flanked by stairways, a three-story gabled rear ell, and a simple cornice. The building is a contributing structure in the Old Campus District, University of South Carolina Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
