Description
English: Built in 1939-1941, this Classical Revival-style building was designed by Henry C. Hibbs to serve as the library of the University of South Carolina, utilizing New Deal-era Works Progress Administration (WPA) funding, and replacing the original President’s House at the east end of the Horseshoe. The building was renamed in 1944 to honor University President J. Rion McKissick, who supported the creation of the building. However, the building, though grand in size and siting, had many shortcomings in its interior layout that impacted the functionality of the building, which led to it being replaced with the university’s present Thomas Cooper Library in 1976. The three-story building features a limestone exterior with a rooftop domed octagonal belvedere with arched windows, a two-story front portico with ionic columns, featuring two sculptures of figures on the roof flanking a large sculptural cartouche, replacement windows, and raised two-story porticoes with ionic columns on the north and south facades. The building is a contributing structure in the Old Campus District, University of South Carolina Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The building today serves as the McKissick Museum, housing exhibits and collections documenting the history of the University of South Carolina, as well as southern culture and the southern environment.
