Title
Medieval buckle (front)
Description
English: The object is a single looped sub ‘D’ shaped buckle frame with an off-centre bar. The frame is made from cast copper alloy. In plan the frame is a ‘D’ shape with an integral rectangular frame protruding from the vertical straight portion of the ‘D’ shape. This vertical portion of the ‘D’ shape becomes the bar around which the pin would have been fixed. However the pin is missing. This pin bar is rectangular in section and has slightly worn edges in the centre. The outer vertical bar is the strap bar, which is also rectangular in section and shows sighs of wear. The sides of the frame which join the pin bar and strap bar are triangular in section, and the upper face is decorated with three transverse ridges. The ‘D’ shaped portion of the frame, but not the pin bar is sub-triangular in section. However the interior edge is slightly bevelled. The upper surface is decorated with fine oblique grooves. There is a notch at the apex of the frame. The notch is a lowered square platform with a ridge on either side. The buckle frame has a well developed grey/green patina. The buckle weighs 2.8g and measures 23.62mm long from the strap bar to the loop apex and 18.08mm wide from the sides of the frame. Egan and Pritchard (2002 Dress Accessories Boydell Press) illustrate a similar buckle, No. 472, which dates to the first half of the 15th century.
