About the time that Englandlost her American colonies the celebrated navigator Captain Cookreached and explored the shores of New Zealand and Australia(1769-1771). Disregarding the claims of earlier visitors to theselands, he took possession of the islands for the British crown. The best use to which England could at first think to put thenew lands was to make them a place of exile for criminals. Thefirst shipload of convicts was landed at Botany Bay in Australiain 1788. But the agricultural riches of large districts of the newlands,— the interior of Australia is a hopeless desert,— theiradaptability to stock raising, and the healthfulness of the climatesoon drew to them a stream of English immigrants.
