Title
Medieval ampulla: Ampulla
Description
English: An almost complete lead alloy Medieval ampulla dating from about AD 1150-1538. The ampulla is flask-shaped and is in fair condition, but is missing the two small loops or lugs from the side of the neck. The designs on each face are very worn but appear to be a W (and possibly a V) within a hatched circle or heart, and, on the other side, possibly a four petaled flower. This is probably an ampulla from East Anglia and the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, a popular pilgrimage site from the later 12th century AD until its destruction by Henry VIII in AD 1538.
