Meinong is a small Hakka town in the south of Taiwan. Hakka (客家) people are Han Chinese people whose ancestral homes are chiefly in the Hakka-speaking provincial areas of Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Sichuan, Hunan, Zhejiang, Hainan and Guizhou provinces. With a population of around 4.6 million people, the Hakka comprise 15 tot 20% of the total Taiwanese population. They are descended largely from Hakka who migrated from southern and northern Guangdong to Taiwan around the end of the Ming dynasty and the beginning of the Qing dynasty (ca. 1644).

Meinong itself is a pleasant town at the foot of the central and east Taiwanese mountains. The place is famous for its Hakka museum, rice noodle dishes and traditional tofu, the charming old buildings of the village, paper umbrellas and pottery.
